What We Did
The purpose of this project was to break down the physics behind sports actions. My group, (Eliza, Dean, Quinton, and myself) chose the action of a forward football pass to focus on. Our instructions were to create a video about the physical concepts behind this action. We had a total of 7 Video design days. My group and I spent 2 of those days designing a storyboard and a script as a guideline that our video would follow. Then, we spent 1 day filming shots of Quinton and Dean throwing and catching the football. We also filmed our introduction and conclusion shots that day as well. After we had all of our clips in place, we began the editing and calculation process. This process took about 4 days, and was the most challenging part of the video creation process. Editing Process During the editing process, we turned our clips into a full video. We used iMovie as our editing software, and it worked very well, and was easy to use. After we had the video edited to our liking, we began to add audio. We took multiple voice overs to help fully explain our thinking, and added music to give the video some finishing touches. When we presented our video to the class, we got some minor critics, and then revised our video accordingly. We then uploaded the final product of our video to youtube. The final product of our video is on the right. Calculations Having a visually pleasing video wasn't the only component of this project. We also had to have in depth descriptions about the physics behind our sport. My group calculated the horizontal and vertical velocities of the football, and the forces of the football being thrown and caught. The horizontal velocity came out to 14.632m/s, and the vertical velocity came out to 6.125m/s. The force of the football being thrown was 21.1N, and the force of the football being caught was 39.5N. For a deeper explanation of these calculations, take a look at the picture below. |

Reflection
Overall, i think this project was very successful for my group. Everyone contributed ideas and seemed interested in the project. However, like most groups, we had our ups and downs, and as an individual, i had my ups and downs as well. For starters, i could have improved on communication with my group. For example, in the very beginning of the project, we had to choose what software program we were going to use to make the video on. Without giving it much thought, my group quickly decided to use iMovie because that was what we were most familiar with. That choice worked out nicely in the beginning, because we didn't have to spend time trying to figure out how to use it. However, because iMovie can only be used on an apple product, I brought my Mac to class on all of our editing days. This worked great for in class work, and we all collaborated, but towards the end of the project, there was more work that needed to be done at home, and I was the only group member with access to the movie, so the collaboration level started to go down. If there was more communication, we may have thought of a better plan. Even though there wasn't as much of an opportunity to collaborate after school, during school our collaboration was great. We all contributed our knowledge and ideas equally for the most part. Personally, i thought i really improved on my leadership skills during this project. For example, I did more working and less talking to my friends throughout this process, and also managed to bring the group back together when they got off task. One other thing i could improve on though, is having more patience with my group members. For example, i could try to give each group member more time to express their ideas/opinions before trying to get back to work. However, i learned a lot of new things about video editing and felt like i was a great asset to my group.
